Athens is the capital and the largest city of Greece. Athens is famous for being one the western world's oldest cities and the source of much of western thought and culture. Ancient Athens has given us western philosophy as the birthplace of Socrates and the home of both Plato's Academy and Aristotle's Lyceum. Monuments of its famed history remain scattered throughout the city. The city's monuments represent its rich history as an important center for ancient Greece as well as the Roman, Byzantine and Ottoman empires. This history as well as its location on the Aegean Sea make modern Athens a popular tourist destination. Domestically, the tourism, business and government sectors make Athens an important center for the Greek economy.
